A little about Alameda County
Alameda County, a county which occupies a majority of the East Bay region, is the seventh-largest county in the state of California with a population of nearly 1.5 million. The county covers more than 800 square miles, and its county seat is Oakland. There are a number of public transportation operations in the county, with local buses and rail systems, including the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) rail system that runs into San Francisco. There are 18 public school districts in the county, as well as a number of private schools, and three community college districts. The county has a home ownership rate of more than 50%, and is home to the famed University of California, Berkeley. There is an annual county fair each year at the fairgrounds in Pleasanton which runs for three weekends in the summer.
There are a number of museums for visitors and residents to enjoy, such as the African American Museum & Library at Oakland, the Alameda Museum, the Alameda Naval Air Museum, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, the Oakland Aviation Museum and the USS Hornet Museum. To come in to town, residents can fly in to the Metropolitan Oakland International Airport. In addition to Berkeley, there are a handful of other colleges in the county, like Mills College, California College of the Arts and California State University, East Bay. The county has a number of sports teams to root for, from basketball's Golden State Warriors to baseball's Oakland Athletics to football's Oakland Raiders. There are at least half a dozen golf courses within the county, and other attractions include the Alameda Civic Ballet, Chabot Space & Science Center and the Oakland Zoo.
