A little about Albany
A city of more than 16,000 in the East Bay area, Albany, California, lies about 13 miles north of Oakland and about the same distance northwest of San Francisco. The city, just north of Berkeley in Alameda County, is home to El Cerrito Plaza and Golden Gate Fields, the only horse-racing track in the Bay Area. Four major parks offer green space for residents and visitors: Middle School, University, Albany Hill and Memorial parks. The town offers great views of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge. Solano Avenue is a popular shopping street, with stores and boutiques located along the length, and the street is host to the Solano Stroll, an festival held each September.
There are three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school in Albany, and one private high school serves the town, St. Mary's College High School, though it is officially located within Berkeley. The University of California, Berkeley, has a large presence in the town because of its close proximity, and it owns a student-housing complex here mostly used for family housing. Education, professional, scientific and technical services are the largest employing industries here, with the nearest hospital in Berkeley and Western Regional Research Laboratory located in town.
