A little about Berkeley
On the northeast shores of San Francisco Bay in Alameda County, the famed city of Berkeley, California, is home to a population of more than 100,000. The city is widely recognized nationally due to its place as the home of the University of California, Berkeley, the campus known for its historic activism and liberal-minded students. The university houses such institutions as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Hall of Science, Space Sciences Laboratory, and Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, and its Golden Bears are frequent contenders for national titles in a number of NCAA varsity sports. But the school isn't all the city has to offer. There is another college in Berkeley, Armstrong University, and Berkeley City College, a community college, as well as such outdoor areas as Claremont Canyon Regional Reserve and Tilden Regional Park.
The city has one of the highest rates of bicycle and pedestrian commuting in the nation, and is home to a number of well-known independent stores and restaurants. The city hosts events like the Jewish Music Festival in March, the Berkeley Arts Festival in the spring, a Himalayan Fair in May, the Berkeley Kite Festival in July, and the How Berkeley Can You Be!? Parade and Festival in September. One high school, three middle schools and 11 elementary schools make up the public school system here. The city is home to such venues as the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, the Jewish Community Center of the East Bay and the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts.
