A little about Livermore
Located about 30 miles inland from San Francisco Bay, Livermore, California, is a mid-sized city with a population of around 75,000 in Alameda County. It is popular around the area and known as a wine country in its own right, with 26 wineries. The city is considered the easternmost city in the Bay Area before reaching the Central Valley. There are a number of golf courses surrounding the community, making it a golfer's haven with spots like Poppy Ridge Golf Course, Springtown Golf Course, Las Positas Golf Course and Ruby Hills Golf Course. Additionally, outdoor areas to be enjoyed are scattered about the city, with Sycamore Grove Park the largest, and a a number of smaller community parks. Two hospitals, Valley Memorial Hospital and Kaiser Medical Center, serve the city's medical needs and the smaller Livermore Municipal Airport operates here. The city is home to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a research laboratory funded by the United States Department of Energy that is home to the world's most powerful laser and the second most powerful supercomputer. Also calling Livermore home is the Sandia National Laboratories, operated by a Lockheed-Martin-owned company.
A new library opened here in 2004, and residents can enjoy its up-to-date technology. Cultural acts in Livermore include the Livermore-Amador Symphony, Del Valle Fine Arts, the Valley Choral Society, Livermore Valley Opera and Valley Dance Theatre, a ballet company. Musical acts are hosted at locations like the Wente Winery during the summer, and at the Wild Vine Wine Lounge & Art Gallery and the Pine St. Bar. Each year the city hosts the Livermore Rodeo and a parade to coincide with it. The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District operates the public schools here, which include 11 elementary schools, four middle schools and three high schools. Two community colleges, Chabot Community College and Las Positas Community College, are located here as well. The city has two stations for the Altamont Commuter Express, a train that runs from Stockton to San Jose, offering residents convenient commuting options.
