A little about Oakland

The county seat of Alameda County and the eighth-largest city in the state, Oakland, California, is one of the top 50 largest cities in the U.S., with a population of almost 400,000. The city is home to some major corporations like Kaiser Permanente and Clorox, as well as corporate headquarters for businesses such as Dreyer's and Cost Plus World Markets. The city is easily reachable, as home to the Oakland International Airport. There are eight BART rail station in the city and bus services are provided by AC Transit. Oakland is home to a major sports team in each of the three large leagues: The Oakland A’s of baseball, the Oakland Raiders of football and basketball’s Golden State Warriors. The city is richly diverse, with more than 150 languages spoken here. The Oakland Unified School District, which oversees the public schools in Oakland, includes 59 elementary schools, 23 middle schools and 19 high schools. Additionally, there are 25 public charter schools not included in the district and a dozen or so private schools.

As a large city, Oakland has more than 50 neighborhoods. There are endless things to do and annual celebrations, including the Oakland Zoo, the Oakland Museum of California, the Chabot Space and Science Center, the Cinco de Mayo Fruitvale Festival & Parade, the Art & Soul Festival and the Black Cowboy Parade, just to name a few. Two community colleges Laney College and Merritt College, are located here, as well as several universities: the California College of the Arts, Holy Names University, Lincoln University, Mills College, Patten University, Samuel Merritt College and the University of California, Berkeley, which is partially located within the Oakland city limits.
