A little about Lafayette

A city of around 25,000 just inland from San Francisco Bay, Lafayette, California, is about 20 miles east of San Francisco in Contra Costa County. The town is picturesque and full of green space getaways, from the Briones Regional Park and the Lafayette Reservoir Recreation Area, which also is the home of the Lafayette Reservoir, a popular place to enjoy the water and cool off in hot summer months. The town was named for the Marquis de Lafayette. Its public school system includes four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, and there are a few private schools, such as Contra Costa Jewish Day School, St. Perpetua School and the Bentley School. The town has its own BART rail station and is just a 25-minute ride on the train into San Francisco.

Education, professional, scientific, and technical services are the largest industries in which people are employed here, and the nearest hospital is six miles away in Walnut Creek. The Contra Costa County Library operates a Lafayette Branch and hosts programs and events throughout the year. Arts and cultural institutions here include the Town Hall Theatre Company of Lafayette, which puts on six productions each year, the children’s version, Town Hall Kids, the Gold Coast Chamber Players, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, and the Lafayette Gallery. Events celebrates annually in town include the Lafayette Jazz Festival and the Lafayette Art & Wine Festival.
