A little about Pinole

Just north of San Francisco Bay on the neighboring San Pablo Bay, Pinole, California, is a suburban town in Contra Costa County that is home to a population of around 20,000. The city lies about 25 miles northeast of San Francisco, and is made up of a land area of more than four square miles. The city gets its name from a Native American word for a kind of flour made from the seeds of maize and other grasses and herbs. Four elementary, two middle schools and one high school, Pinole Valley High School, make up the public education system here. Retail centers in town include the Appian 80 Shopping Center, Hilltop Mall and Pinole Vista Shopping Center.

Pinole’s largest employers include Doctor's Hospital, the schools, the city of Pinole, Target and Albertson's Grocery, and the biggest industries are construction, health care and education. East Bay Improv, an comedy troupe, performs at the Pinole Community Theater, and the Pinole Community Players perform throughout the year as well. Pinole residents can commute into Bay area cities from the "El Cerrito del Norte" BART station, and bus service within the city is provided by WestCAT. The Contra Costa County Library operates a Pinole Branch, and there is also a school of performing arts.
