A little about San Mateo County
Covering most of the San Francisco Peninsula just south of San Francisco, San Mateo County, California, is home to more than 700,000 residents. It is home to the San Francisco International Airport, in the northern end of the county, and Silicon Valley begins at the southern end. The county is among the 20 most affluent counties in the United States, in terms of personal, per capita and household income. The county seat is Redwood City, and other cities in the county include Menlo Park, San Bruno, Daly City, San Carlos and Woodside. Portions of Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Golden Gate National Recreation Area are located in the county, as well as more than a dozen county parks, and all or portions of a dozen state parks, including San Bruno Mountain State Park, Portola Redwoods State Park, Butano State Park and Año Nuevo State Park. There are some Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) trains in the county that provide access to the airport and the northern portion of the county, ending at Millbrae. SamTrans provides local bus service within the county.
The county is home to two dozen public school districts, a number of provate schools, the College of San Mateo community college, Notre Dame de Namur University and Menlo College. Attractions within San Mateo County include the Coyote Point Museum, Pulgas Water Temple, Cow Palace, San Mateo County History Museum, Computer History Museum and Peninsula Museum of Art. There are a handful of large farms and ranches that can be visited for picking pumpkins, buying produce or horseback riding trails. Seven wineries provide the opportunity to enjoy the famed Northern California wines, and eight golf courses give golfers plenty of options for teeing off. Cultural offerings in the county include such venues as Broadway by the Bay, Fox Theatre, Hillbarn Theatre, Teatro ZinZanni, Redwood Symphony and the Burlingame String Chamber Orchestra.
