A little about Solano County
Solano County, California, is located in the Bay-Delta region, about halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento. It has a population of almost 400,000, with Fairfield its county seat and Vallejo the largest city. Solana is one of the original counties of the state, and it was established in 1850 at the same time California established its statehood. The county is home to such cities as Benicia, Dixon, Fairfield, Rio Vista, Suisun City, Vacaville and Vallejo. There are a number of public transportation options in operation: the Vallejo Transit, which also runs the Baylink Ferry to San Francisco;Fairfield Suisun Transit; Benicia Breeze; Vacaville City Coach; and Rio Vista Delta Breeze. All of the transportation ways connect with one another, providing residents with opportunities to easily move about the county. There are also connections to the BART rail in Contra Costa County, and links to Napa, Yolo and Sacramento counties.
Museums here include the Travis Air Museum, Western Railway Museum, Benicia Fire Museum and Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum. There are six public school districts in the county, and Solano Community College operates four campuses. Other schools include California Maritime Academy, Chapman University and Touro University. Outdoor recreation areas include San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Lake Solano Park and Sandy Beach Park. There are around 10 wineries and vineyards in the county, and an Anheuser-Busch Brewery offers guided tours. Cultural offerings include Vacaville Performing Arts Theatre, Vallejo Symphony, Pepperbelly’s Comedy & Variety Theatre, Vacaville Performing Arts Theatre and Empress, Harbor and Majestic theaters.
